Wireless was the hot topic at the Comnet 2001 Conference and Expo here, proving that networking technology has cut the cord.

Exhibitors such as Cisco Systems and Moby Dark offered the latest in wireless LAN solutions, while standards groups such as the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (WECA) discussed interoperability issues, including promoting the IEEE 802.11 standard.

"[WECA's] goal is to provide certification for the standards [of wireless interoperability]," says Angela Champness, secretary of WECA and director of product and business management at Lucent Technologies. Products deemed WECA-compliant are awarded a WiFi interoperability seal.

While interest in wireless networking technology is growing exponentially within the industry, some solution providers say it is only starting to garner interest with end users.

Michael LeBlanc, president of solution provider LeBlanc Communications Group, says he has seen increased demand in wireless options, but not as much as he had hoped. Large customers that buy a phone system usually ask for a wireless LAN to use in a gathering space such as a conference room, he says, but he usually has to suggest wireless options for his smaller customers.

Wireless LANs are a viable alternative to wired options, but interoperability issues such as low speed and security make the technology less attractive, says Mike Amato, vice president of business development at integrator Big Apple Technologies.

Steven Williams, president of integrator Wirelessguys.com, is less concerned about standards and standards bodies. "When I sell a solution, I sell a solution to a specific problem," Williams says.

Moby Dark showed its wireless IP router for the LAN and WAN, and Cisco showcased its new Aironet 350 Series of 802.11b wireless LAN products.

VPNs also were popular products at the show. VPN maker RapidStream unveiled its RapidStream 800 VPN/Firewall appliance, which offers 600 Mbps of full-duplex firewall throughput and 360 Mbps of full-duplex VPN throughput. And Anritsu added virtual private network support for its MultiFlow 5000 family of switches.
